AFTER a fierce 10-month contest, the winners of the Dream of the Red Chamber talent show have been unveiled: Li Xudan, 18, and Yao Di, 24, got the roles of Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai respectively.

But the person who'll play the role of Jia Baoyu is still a mystery. None of the three competitors seem to please the director Hu Mei. "Each of them has their disadvantages. They appear in a masculine way, lacking the delicacy and inner beauty of Jia Baoyu," Hu said.

LI Xudan is regarded as "an ancient person living in modern society". The 18-year-old Li seems cut off from the rest of the world.

; C1 ^$ c2 i. xIn a noisy crowd, she's always the one who's left alone, slowly stroking her long black hair with her fingers. She never tires of flowery dresses and refuses to wear jeans.

"I felt lucky to get the chance to act in the drama," she said. "It gives me a place [protected from] the world that I found it hard to mix in, and it gives me a life I've been searching for, for a long time."

: S' g" {" Z$ @$ z/ `9 \! rAt age eight, she was sent to live at her grandfather's place, a garden at the foot of Zijin Mountain in Nanjing. She spent almost 10 years there. Far away from the downtown, Li grew up listening to the sound of insects and watching the fish in the pond.

8 G# r" {4 F: c$ _$ b: b$ lWhile other kids were hauling their schoolbags to class, she stayed at home where her grandpa taught her some traditional Chinese literature and culture. Every day she read the texts and acquired a traditional education in calligraphy and the guzheng. She displayed her poetic talent by putting her sentiments into her poems., X+ H( U/ U" G$ h! k- m

The life of Lin Daiyu began to haunt her when she saw the Shaoxing opera performer Wang Wenjuan in Dream of the Red Chamber.

& c) l6 Q8 L; c3 j; j3 rIn a drama school in Jiangsu, at age 12, Li recited classic scenes like Burying the Flower more than a hundred times. When she got a chance to read the book, she was absorbed in its world at once. After that, a copy of the book was always at her bedside.

3 Y* g5 K" H0 l* g; I6 c" F! C"This Sister Lin didn't fall from heaven," the director Hu Mei said, "She was brought up by her grandfather in the ways of Daiyu, and she eats, sleeps and breathes Daiyu. Every move or expression of hers expresses it."

THE first thing Yao Di did after she got the role of Xue Baochai was to turn off her cellphone for a day.

"Suddenly I was surrounded by the media and fans," she told 21st Century. "I just wanted to go back to the world I belong to, which is quiet and free."

, X& Y% s9 v, Y5 oYao Di, 24, describes herself as a rebellious girl who always tries to avoid restrictions. To get away from her strict parents, at age 16 she left home alone to study Shaoxing opera in Hangzhou. She played the role of Lin Daiyu in a Shaoxing adaptation of Dream of the Red Chamber.

Then Yao came to Beijing to study at the Beijing Film Academy (BFA).

0 E2 f/ O/ E) @; _"During the BFA interview, I spent 300 yuan renting a basement to live in for a month in Beijing," she said. "Every day I would call my dad and tell him how I did in the exams. Before I knew it, I had gone through the last round and was asked to get a health checkup."

9 F0 u' ]' l& @  C% FNow, after having played lots of roles on-screen, Yao feels natural on stage. This smoothed the way to the top of the casting process in the talent show.

But Yao said things have not been as easy as people think.

+ N* V1 Z2 h7 b& g+ r% L: uShe said she has at times wanted to quit the show because she has to stay almost all the time in the enclosed training center in the suburbs of Beijing. "It's suffocating," she said. But she stayed on to pursue this ideal role in the TV drama.

She finds the role of Baochai difficult to interpret. "Baochai is talented and ambitious. She treats people in a polite, proper way. But secretly she hates obeying rules."

- t9 E1 l3 \7 ]3 y* }In contrast, Yao said she's "modern and rebellious". She likes T-shirts and cool sandals. She takes delight in listening to English songs and watching Hollywood films.

I don't see Li in the Daiyu role at all. Li isn't elegant, nor can she seem weak or pathetic in the way the part calls for. Li studied Shaoxing opera for years. The difference between acting on stage and in front of the camera will be too much of a challenge for her.
